da bet7: Paul Robinson is delighted by the news that Ledley King will join Jose Mourinho’s backroom staff at Tottenham Hotspur.
da bwin: Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spur is on cloud nine for his former teammate, who impressed Mourinho while working with the defence since the suspension of football.
Recent reports revealed the club’s former captain King has agreed to return to Tottenham on a full-time basis after the Portuguese announced his assistant coach Ricardo Formosinho will be leaving to pursue his own career.
Mourinho has since confirmed that the club legend will take a place in his coaching staff next season.
The old White Hart Lane number one, who played with King in over a hundred games for England and Spurs, insists his countryman is a “wonderful role” model for the likes of Japhet Tanganga, Oliver Skipp and Troy Parrott as he will be able to build strong relationships with them.
Robinson told Football Insider: “I know Ledley has been working behind the scenes with some of the fringe players and since Jose has come in he has done more and more.
“I am pleased for him and the club. He is a one club man and a great guy. I have a lot of time and respect for Ledley.
“It is a natural progression for him to join the backroom staff. A wonderful role model for all of the younger players and he will have a great rapport with them. He has a great manner about him and will be that link between the manager and the players.”
It is hard to argue with Robinson on this one, as King was a loyal servant of the club for many years.
The 39-year-old made more than 300 appearances for Spurs, scoring fourteen goals overall, and he famously lifted the League Cup when they beat Chelsea 2-1 in the final at Wembley. This triumph is still Tottenham’s last trophy to this day.
He turned out for club and country before his career was sadly cut short due to injury, but has remained affiliated with his boyhood club as an ambassador.
King will forever be a fan favourite with the THFC faithful as he enjoys the privilege of hearing his name ring out around the stands on the 26th minute of every game to commemorate his shirt number.
It is no secret that the Lilywhites have leaked goals aplenty this season although it is worth remembering they kept four clean sheets since the Premier League restart, which could be attributed to his influence at Hotspur Way.
While his role is reportedly not specifically a coaching position, he remains a calm presence in the dressing room and is a well-respected figure by the Spurs squad.
King has a long-standing association with the club and he will be hoping he can make an immediate impact as Mourinho’s side resume their hunt for silverware next season.
